As Eastern Mediterranean University Underwater Research and Imaging Center, between 17 May-20 September 2021, we have protected Caretta caretta nests at Dokuzevler, Hapur, Salamis, Long Beach, Iskele Picnic Area and Onur Camping beaches, remove the baby turtles stuck in the nests and released them. We carried out rehabilitation of the baby turtles which were in need. And also we have cleaned the beaches regularly.
Despite the lack of volunteers due to the pandemic, the local people did not spare their help during our work. It was pleasing to see that the awareness on this issue has increased with each passing year.
We organized 4 events where we released the baby turtles stuck in the nests and released them with the participation of the public and especially the children. In this way, we tried to raise environmental awareness in children.

Sea turtles, which are very sensitive when they hatch, face many natural predators. Only 1/1000 of the puppies can become adults. The litter on the beaches prevents the baby sea turtles from reaching the sea and negatively affects their chances of life. For this reason, beach cleaning works are carried out at specific intervals.

As part of the Project for Sea Turtles Conservation and Monitoring, we carry out various activities during the spawning season with EMU AIESEC volunteers and teammates.
Our main activities are Nest location determination, covering the nests with protective cages, nest tracking, area cleaning, and offspring control. Besides, turtles are monitored during night-time spawning at specific periods, and necessary tag/tracking devices are attached.
